Uncle Chongs Local Delights 钟叔叔本地传统美食 truly Malaysian Cuisine

18 April 2020 - Despite the crazy MCO lockdown that we need to stay and cook at home, there are times where we will be craving for some local Malaysian food.

Good to know that one of my friend, Vincent, who continue the legend of his family F n B business to sell Malaysia top selling food.

Luckily we have grab delivery/ Lalamove, it is easier for me to order anything further than 20km.

###

So this is what I have ordered from Uncle Chong Local delights:

1. Curry Noodles (special aromatic curry soup broth with generous ingredients: toufupok, bean sprouts, poached white chicken thighs) " during non-MCO time we will have fresh cockles too"

2. Ipoh Koay Teow Soup (chicken shreds, small prawns, clear soup broth)

3. Nasi lemak Special (coconut rice with a deep fried drumstick, fried egg, anchovies, peanuts)

4. Nasi Ayam Penyet (the origin Indonesian cuisine, deep fried egg, salad vegetables)

5. Salted Chicken with Chinese Herbs (healthy nutritious chicken drumstick with a little geiji)

6. Dry Curry Chicken Noodle
(sweet gravy rendang chicken sauce, hard to get a real rendang paste nowadays)

7. White Coffee (not 3-in-1 type, handmade using ipoh coffee beans) coffee brewer originally also from Ipoh

8. Uncle Chong Coffee Special (dark coffee as an energy booster, a truly energizing day)

As you can see, there are 3 things you won't miss out in their MCO lockdown food delivery menu: chicken drumstick, fried egg, white fragrant rice.

Wow, you don't think I can finish all okay? All 8 items were shared among 5 adults, LOL.

But the point is some of the food is so good, that I couldn't find the same taste elsewhere...Hence, I keep on asking Vincent what's the secret behind, till I have to list out the questions out of my curiosity:

###

1) Can you briefly explain to me the story of uncle’s chong local delights? How many years , from a stall evolved to a restaurant?

" Uncle Chong's Local Delight is in operation for more than 40 years (Since 1980).
Uncle Chong’s Local Delights offers pork-free muslim-friendly cuisine with the classic local flavours.

We cook our food with 100% Halal Certified meat supplier.

Our specialties are Curry Laksa, Asam Laksa, Nasi Lemak and Chicken Rice. But during MCO, we only serve limited menu choices.

We are the 4th generations of original KLites where our grand parents started to run food business in Foch Avenue Jalan Foch, K.L (Now Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock). We are typical KL people who venture and started all the good food, which we are very proud of.

My dad first stall is in Kota Raya. He also tried to expand outlets but as days go by, he closed all stalls.

The dishes are prepared using closely guarded family recipes that have been passed down for generations.

I continue my father's legend because I want to share this recipe to every Malaysians.

My dad and I are very humorous, till now, my dad still happy to come over to the coffeeshop and make sure I followed his recipe. He QC on me, haha!

2) Omg, it is the first time I have ever tried such a fragrant curry soup! The one I always tasted outside was either too watery, or merely tasteless broth. I finish drinking the whole curry broth! May I know what’s the secret behind?

the secret of making good curry broth is during the process of cooking the curry paste must have good control of the temperature and timing together with the fresh ingredient. The curry paste we made from scratch, it is not a ready paste. I cook the paste minimum for 2 hours. Of course, we have some secret ingredients in our recipe as well.

3) So for your nasi lemak special, seems the deep fried chicken with juicy meats give a great hit. How would you describe your deep fried chicken recipe VS KFC fried chicken?

" our fried chicken is marinated with special flour and herbs, matching to the taste that goes well with the nasi lemak and our blend of sambal. To compare our fried chicken with KFC, KFC chicken will be different to pair up with the nasi lemak.

4) As far as I know, ayam penyet is a deep fried chicken in Malaysia, but I notice that your chicken was firstly deep fried, later on topped with a slight sour gravy rendang kinda taste. May I ask why is our recipe is different than the normal deep fried ayam penyet?

"This is our special version of ayam penyet that pass down from my dad that he tried this version many decades ago and he wants to share this good taste with others' Our one is really special where we have the sauce poured on the fried chicken instead.

My father firstly went to Indonesia decades ago, and he is the one who co-founded this ayam penyet. the ingredient we use for ayam penyet: serai, lengkuas, kunyit, fresh pineapple all blended together.
Then, I will deep fried chicken. Put chicken aside, and then I will cook the penyet sauce. Add in the chicken with the sauce, low heat for 30 mins at least. The ending of the taste is a combination of clear sweet, mild spicy, but gravy and sour tasting.

5) Can you enlighten me how do you do the salty herbal chicken? If one don't cook, we thought just apply more salt, but that’s not possible, because it takes the right recipe to have a salty chicken as tastefully done as a good salted baked chicken in Ipoh. So how to make sure a salted chicken herbs are nicely done?

' our version of salted chicken emphasize on the balance of saltiness and the taste of the chinese herbs.  we steam the salted herbs chicken.

6) Can you tell me the difference between your ayam penyet and dry curry chicken?

you can taste the difference in the gravy that the texture are totally different that both are our secret recipe.the dry curry we make are in thick fragrant sauce unlike the watery types that you usually have it

7) So how do you get your local coffee beans, and what make it so special?
we work with the supplier for more than 60 yrs and they know us well with our requirements and that make our coffee different with others.
