Tech Talk - Malaysia top online grocery and food listing during lockdown

24 April 2020
- So ever since the lockdown, I do feel pity that the food stalls, gerai tepi jalan, foodtrucks cant operate the food takeaway. I do not know why the smaller food business people couldnt sell their food though, guess crowd is a concern.

so here's how we do at home. I have tried the wet market in Ampang. everything operates as usual. Price is still manageable. But for someone like me, sometimes I do not know what vegetables I should choose... I was too shy to ask the vegetables sellers what's the names of the vegetables, hence I just select things I am familiar with like old cucumber, white radish, watercress, spinach, choy sum, and left.

So I did try my luck at Tesco supermarket but I super hate the long queues. I totally skip my queue at Village Grocer and Aeon. I avoid going in the morning.

Tesco do not limit the total headcount going in, but they do check each people temperature and instruct us to sanitize hands.

Most shoppers are cautious as they put on face masks and plastic gloves while shopping. What disappointing me was the local vegetables and local fruits were totally gone. Some other items are orange juices, Marie biscuits, Dettol, instant dry noodles, baked beans are totally vanished.

Others products such as: pork, milk, chicken, fish, seafood, and other dry groceries are available.

I did try my luck at 99 speedmart, and most of them are yet to stock up the products, guess it is hard to predict the delivery time.

Bread was a hit trend and I guess everyone back to the normal days without panic buying.

the funny part is, those independent groceries are doing pretty well and stocked up all the dry groceries. Some also offer fresh vegetables, frozen meats, etc.

So, in the end, I haven't have any green vegetables for the first few weeks. I started my very first order on 9 April 2020 after getting tired couldn't get the vegetables in the supermarket. Plus I worried that the price by the market seller will just name any price as they like, and I am not good in choosing the vegetables type.

Despite all the chaotic crazy facebook updates in those facebook groups, I would like to list down some of the amazing website/ apps I have gone through and feel it is awesome cause they build the app/ website within such a short notice.

The retired uncles aunties might be sorrow cause they operate some food business but they dont really know how to do the digital marketing....The biggest and most immediate issue is that many food sellers are not tech savvy.

So despite the fully occupied Happy Fresh or Tesco.com.my, here are some the new players in the food, restaurant, grocery listing where they really support and help the business in Malaysia.
