Leprosy Story Gallery

In 1922, Dr. E. A.O. Travers, a high-ranking health official at the Setapak leprosy asylum saw the terrible conditions the leprosy patients were living in. He then proposed to the British government that a fully-equipped and more humane leprosarium be built at Sungai Buloh.

In 1930, the Sungai Buloh Settlement was officially opened. It catered specifically for those suffering from leprosy, which at that time was considered an incurable disease.

Dewan Orang Ramai Sungai Buloh, which was opened by Malaysia first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1959 and had formerly served as the settlement's cinema. As you can seethe VIPs wasn't wearing any mask or fear cause in the later stage, only they found out that leprosy germs will be spread only if you are close enough to be to face to face with another leprosy carrier, and leprosy transferred through coughing or sneeze.

Mr Lim Tian Seng, 'Sifu Lim', documenting the story of the Sungai Buloh Settlement's Residents.

Each of them live happily with each of them got work to do!

The unknown source of leprosy, the outcasted victims, and unknown reason why one person will get infected....some just saw red dots on body, while some start to feel. Numb on certain body parts.

1920s method: This is a real giant size of injection, where the leprosy patients get injected with oil from the chaulmoogra nut. This course of treatment was extremely painful

I like this photo a lot. It tells a story of a teenage girl had to separate from her family as she was diagnosed with leprosy.

I like the concept of the cardboard being used as a study chair, as people watched how the [THE WAY HOME] -  Reconnecting the descendants of leprosy patients with their families, where their children were separated from leprosy couple since birth.

How both leprosy couple give birth to a totally normal baby, where the babies will be taken care for 6 months, to be later given to the leprosy patient's, get adoption, or end up staying in another childcare centre next to the sungai buloh settlement.

Some child found back their parents in the year 2000. some died without seeing their kids, or their kids didn't want or reluctant to find their leprosy parents. Some couldn't find back their relatives still.

How their disability didn't stop them to make art and craft, involve in the gardening businesses.
All the clay work and art craft, drawing are all done by the Leprosy Sungai Buloh residents!

They really build their own community and a new neighbourhood town, with associations, schools, amenities, facilities, etc.

Some born talent has Pablo Picasso inspiration!

This is a very touching story. the Leprosy artist drew this from her memory, this is her last meal she had with her mom before she was admitted to the sungai buloh settlement.

While enjoying the tour of knowing the memory lane of leprosy, this place is also quite famous for instagram check in though.

Check out some of the photo shots I have taken!

###

some vintage memories left by one of the leprosy residents.

A standard house of those who can live on their own.

How 513 incident graveyard was just near to this sungai buloh settlement. How illegal samsu wine was done by 3 leprosy patients.

How leprosy spooks everyone from 1930s - 1980s, till they found a cure to combat leprosy in 1980s.
