Nyonya Taste Cuisine @ Kota Laksamana

27 Oct 2019 - A quick 5 minutes drive away from the Melaka city to come to Kota Laksamana for a proper nyonya / peranakan food hunt.

You can't complain much when you are so tired and hungry after a long walk under the hot sun at melaka jonker Street.

We avoid long queue from Nancy's kitchen, where we googled this nyonya restaurant with no queue at all. 😂

If you enjoy some history story of the peranakan origin, it started since Princess hang li poh married sultan malaya. Some say their language is a mix of hokkien Chinese, malay jawa, and later on.. Lost in transition as younger generation speak less. I do wonder if any still speak the origin peranakan language.

Restaurant was decorated with lots of heritage nyonya kitchen props. A cosy simple comfortable ambience are fine for simple authentic nyonya food. Might not have lots of choices but you won't be ordering all anyway.

We ask for recommendations but the aunty who put down the order seems not good in giving recommendations, but we also have a quick conversation with aunty, and we decided to order:

1) curry kapitan chicken. Curry sauce but all peranakan nyonya food wasn't categorised as the spicy for your info. The taste overall is delicious and creamy aromatic curry sauce, where we have a good taste to pair it up with just a simple white rice. Chicken was first fried and later adding on the tomato puree curry paste. This suddenly reminded me of the joke about the crispy chicken rendang in the master chef.

2) tauyu pork - dark soy sauce pork meats for the kids. This braised pork with soy sauce is a fujian/ nyonya cuisine. Pork meat was so tender and succulent. I would say their dark soy sauce was totally different from we had in kl. Some people direct translate its English from hokkien language - tau Yu bak.

3) asam fish - when I ask aunty, is it the same with the 'asam empat rasa' on the menu, she says no. I do notice asam Pedas is a hot selling item in the malay restaurant in melaka, but for the nyonya style, not quite. Quite a good pinch of sour lime and tamarind juice we can taste from the asam sauce. Very little spicy taste in this dish. The fish flesh is good enough to be served.

Free us two kueh as dessert.

You can't find the kapitan chicken and asam fish from the menu. We pick these two dishes based on the photos from the wall.
